We all want the best for our children. The vast majority of parents when asked "what do you want for your children?" will say "I just want them to be happy and successful in life." But what is happiness? What is success? And how does our own wellbeing and happiness impact our children?
Philosophers and psychologists have been asking these questions for centuries. Aristotle, famous for his thoughts on happiness, believed that happiness was the 'aim of human existence' but he admitted that no-one at the time could really agree what happiness was. Psychologists now know there are two main types of happiness, but people generally only recognise one.
Defining success is even harder, but we could argue that success is "achieving what you value." But many people aren't really aware of their values.
I am a qualified teacher, a positive psychologist, a coach, a parent and I'm incredibly passionate about mental health, personal development, and the science behind Positive Psychology and flourishing. I have learnt things later in life that I wish I had known as a young person growing up, struggling to decide what to do with my life. Young people, schools and parents today are struggling with so much pressure and so many decisions that it can be hard to know which way to turn.
Positive Psychology is an 'applied science' and this scientific enquiry is being applied to many walks of life to help uncover how we can help individuals and society to flourish. The dedication and hard work of positive education psychologists means we now know so much about the science of well-being, potential, flourishing and happiness, but unfortunately this science has not yet filtered through to mainstream education and families.
